Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to Address Peace Summit

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will join Rotarians and peacemakers from around the world along with a high-powered panel of participants at the Rotary World Peace Summit.

On April 25 - 27, 2008, participants from across the globe will gather in Windsor, Ontario overlooking the international border between Canada and the U.S. to discuss how to bring peace to the planet. This North American event, hosted by Rotary International President Wilfrid J. Wilkinson, is the fourth and final in a series that have taken place this year in Bulgaria, Turkey and Kenya.

Key events will include a panel discussion hosted by the events Honourary Chair, Allan Rock, Canada's UN Ambassador from 2004-2006, with HRH Prince Zeid Ra'ad, Jordan's Ambassador to the U.S., and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee, Lloyd Axworthy.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was named one of Time magazine's "Heroes for the Planet" for his success in helping Riverkeeper lead the fight to restore the Hudson River. The group's achievement helped spawn more than 160 Waterkeeper organizations across the globe. One of Rotary's corporate platforms is developing clean water opportunities for citizens of the world.

Join Rotary International President Wilf Wilkinson this April 25th to 27th at the fourth and culminating Rotary International Peace Forum. This North American event in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, is the final in a series that has taken place this year in Bulgaria, Turkey and Africa.

A special welcome to Honourary Chair, Allan Rock and friends – an extraordinary panel discussion on International Peace Initiatives.

Honourary Chair, Allan Rock, PC, BA LL.B was Canada's Ambassador to the United Nations (2004-2006). He remains involved in international and UN work, serving at present as Special Advisor on Sri Lanka to the UN on the subject of Children and Armed Conflict, as well as Chair of the Board of the Trust Fund for War-Affected Children in Northern Uganda.

Peace Fact:   As a student leader in 1970, he met John Lennon and drove him around Ottawa while he was hosting him for a "peace conference" he was holding. He had invited Lennon to Ottawa after his famous "bed-in" Montreal.

Prince Zeid Ra'ad Zeid Al-Hussein is Jordan's Ambassador to the United Nations. In the course of his distinguished career as a diplomat, peacekeeper and international mediator, Prince Zeid has developed experience in the UN's most challenging issues in the 21st century. 

Peace Fact: Prince Zeid was an official candidate to succeed Kofi Annan as Secretary General of the United Nations.

Lloyd Axworthy was appointed President of the University of Winnipeg in 2004. He is also serving as Chairman of the Human Security Centre for the United Nations University for Peace (UPEACE).

Peace Fact: In his role as Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, he became internationally known for his advancement of the human security concept, in particular, the Ottawa Treaty - a landmark global treaty banning anti-personnel landmines. For his leadership on landmines, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
